The co-operative programme for monitoring and evaluation of the long-range transmission of air pollutants in Europe (inofficially 'European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme' = EMEP) is a scientifically based and policy driven programme under the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution (CLRTAP) for international co-operation to solve transboundary air pollution problems. Air pollution impacts our health, environment and economy. Air pollutants come from multiple sources.

It comprises eight protocols on the reduction of specific air pollutants. It currently numbers more than 50 signatory states from Europe, Central Asia and North America. Switzerland has ratified all the protocols, and the FOEN is actively involved in a variety of CLRTAP committees. In order to ensure this co-operation, members of the CAFE Secretariat regularly attend key CLRTAP meetings, and vice versa.
